Are we nearing the end of traditional car keys?
Tim Cook would like to think so. In an exclusive interview with The Telegraph in London, the Apple chief executive reveals how the revolutionary features of the Apple Watch could forever alter our daily lives.
There will be lots of other potentially revolutionary uses. The watch is designed to be able to replace car keys and the clumsy, large fobs that are now used by many vehicles” – Tim Cook, Apple CEO
While adoption of smartwatches hasn’t hit the mainstream yet, the Apple Watch could change this. Automakers like Audi, BMW, Hyundai and Mercedes are already working on the integration of cars and smartwatches, either using Android Wear or the Pebble smartwatch. In other words, some of those car manufacturers already have an app that handles common key fob tasks like locking and unlocking the car, turning on headlights, or controlling the air condition. Integrating their companion apps to the upcoming Apple Watch is the natural next step.
We are still years away from completely ditching the physical key, but we have no doubt the Apple Watch will facilitate and accelerate the trend toward keyless system in cars. This could be a major development and will reinforce the view that Apple is circling the automotive market.
