Apple designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson sat down with Vogue’s International Fashion Editor Suzy Meeks at the Conde Nast International Luxury Conference last week to share some of their thoughts about designing the Apple Watch.
For Ive, the company isn’t intentionally competing with luxury goods.
The product that I buy next week — it will be more capable and will do things I cannot possibly imagine in just six months time. Now I think that’s extraordinary. I don’t know how we can compare these wonderful mechanical watches that we own and the product that has such a comprehensive functionality and capability that will grow and change beyond our imagining” – Jony Ive.
Regarding usability, Apple’s design chief revealed that they wanted to make things even more personal, while building on top of existing technology.
What I know is our intent has remained the same and is consistent, which is to try to take what is remarkable tech in terms of its capability and utility and make it more and more personal. The consequences of that path I’m not aware of, other than that I hope people will like the Watch and find it personal and beautiful.” – Jony Ive.
