Just nine months after hitting 200 million users, Instagram has now over 300 million active users, with 70% of them coming from outside the US. Over the past four years, the photo and video app has grown into a global community that shares more than 70 million photos and videos each day.
Instagram’s rise has been remarkable. The photo-sharing network has doubled the amount of its active monthly users since last fall, when the service passed the 150 million mark. According the Wall Street Journal, 210 million of its 300 million users are now outside the U.S., compared to 120 million in March.
And no, Instagram is not bigger than Twitter. First, the two platforms are just different. One focuses on photos (70 million of photos and videos a day for Instagram), the other on ideas (500 million tweets a day for Twitter). Second, the comparison is misleading. While Instagram is growing at a faster rate than Twitter in terms of monthly active users, there are too many different metrics of a social network’s size that it becomes difficult to tell which platform is larger.
